Entering middle school as the new kid is hard, but for Auggie Pullman, the main character in the best-selling middle grade novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, it's downright terrifying. Auggie has Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder that causes major malformations of the face.

If this scenario sounds realistic, it's because it's a reality for many kids across the globe. That said, the new movie about Auggie Pullman, Wonder is not based on a true story. It is, however, inspired by real events.

Wonder is a 2017 American coming-of-age family comedy-drama directed by Stephen Chbosky, who co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Conrad and Jack Thorne. It is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by R. J. Palacio and stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay, Mandy Patinkin, and Daveed Diggs.

Jacob Tremblay, the megatalented child actor who had a breakthrough role in Room, portrays Auggie. You might not realize that from watching the movie because he's plastered in next-level makeup and prosthetics. Tremblay gives an outstanding performance, but he doesn't have a facial disfigurement.

Although Auggie's face and everyday experiences are imaginary, the lives of the some 600,000 individuals who have been diagnosed with a craniofacial condition in the United States are very much real – and 7-year-old Shane Vysocky and 13-year-old Emily Merrill are among them.

Palacio's 2012 book, "Wonder," tells the story of 10-year-old Auggie Pullman, a fictional boy with facial differences, and his experiences in everyday life dealing with the condition. The book was inspired by a real-life encounter Palacio had with a child who had a craniofacial disorder.

Auggie has a craniofacial difference, which means he was born with a face that is different than most. He had to go through a whole bunch of surgeries to reconstruct his face, he had a breathing tube, and a tube in his stomach for eating. Auggie's mom homeschooled him because he spent so much time in the hospital.
